Our Sustainability Story

Protecting the planet has never been more important than it is right now, and making changes for a sustainable future includes our fashion choices! Unfortunately, the fashion industry plays a huge role in advocating consumerism, leading to over-consumption which results in global warming. The fashion industry alone accounts of 10% of carbon emissions produced by humans – that’s massive! The problem lies not only with the negative effects on the environment, but also the effects on the people in the fast fashion industry who are under-paid, over-worked, and subject to unsafe environments. To change this for a more sustainable future, we must change our shopping habits, and small earth-friendly brands are part of the solution…

Learning about how damaging the fashion industry is for the planet, it became incredibly important that Elosa was built on sustainability, with an aim to change (slowly, but surely) the future of the fashion industry. To do this, every aspect of the brand must acknowledge and prioritise sustainability, from the materials used, to the processes that feed into the design and production of each piece.

With sustainability at the core of the brand, we hope to create beautiful pieces for beautiful people who share our passion for the protection of the earth. Keep reading to find out how sustainability is at the core of each and every part of the brand…

Materials...

One of the most important parts of creating eco-friendly products is finding materials that do not harm the planet either before or after the final product has been made. Within the fast fashion industry, polyester is one of the most commonly used fabrics (check your big-branded clothing labels – I bet most of it is polyester!) but what most people don’t realise is that this is actually plastic that is polluting the planet. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternatives…

After extensive research, it appeared that there were some fabrics that were much more eco-friendly compared to the most commonly used ones. Elosa pieces are mostly made from bamboo or organic cotton, with the exception of some standard cotton and deadstock fabrics.

Why Bamboo?

Bamboo offers luxurious and eco-friendly qualities, making it a great choice for sustainable clothing. Bamboo is self-regenerating meaning it re-grows once cut and does not need harmful chemicals to grow. Not only this, but growing bamboo helps offset carbon emissions as it absorbs far more carbon than the equivalent area of other plants, releasing 30-35% more oxygen than an equivalent sized forest. Bamboo is also thought to be biodegradable, which makes it far more eco-friendly than man-made fibres which cannot biodegrade. Due to all the positive eco-friendly characteristics, our bamboo sets are deemed some of our most earth-friendly items available. If sustainability is what you’re really looking for, go for a bamboo piece!

Why Organic Cotton?

Although cotton is sometimes coined as ‘eco-friendly’ due to its natural composition, there are huge environmental issues that result from cotton cultivation. Organic cotton overcomes most of these issues and is therefore a more sustainable and eco-friendly option. It may seem surprising, but the large amount of water consumed by growing standard cotton is one of its biggest environmental hazards. Organic cotton uses 91% less water than standard cotton and does not use harmful chemicals to enable growth. In turn, this means the surrounding eco-systems are not harmed and the soil is healthy enough to absorb carbon, unlike standard cotton soils. This helps offset carbon emissions. Although organic cotton is not 100% perfect, it is far better than the current commonly-used fabrics in the industry. Our organic cotton pieces are some of our more earth-friendly items, so if sustainability is your top priority, go for organic!

Why Deadstock?

The sustainability of using deadstock fabrics has been given mixed opinions. The advantage of using deadstock fabrics is that they are simply fabrics printed by large companies who do not want it anymore. Therefore, by using the deadstock fabric you are saving it from going to landfill. The problem with deadstock fabrics is that they have now been coined sustainable and therefore could be used to greenwash. Remember, deadstock fabrics could still be non-eco-friendly fabrics that only exist to be purchased because a large company over-printed and wanted to get rid of it! The real problem here lies with the larger companies over-printing, creating excess waste. At least lots of it is beautiful, so we get to use it up!

Packaging...

As someone who loves opening a beautifully packaged item, I knew I wanted Elosa packaging to achieve that same feeling of a gift being unwrapped. Although, I also knew that the sustainability of the packaging was even more important. Packaging from big brands is almost always plastic which pollutes the earth and adds to global warming; so, Elosa packaging is 100% plastic free! Every component is recyclable and biodegradable…

The box – every Elosa order comes packaged in a brown cardboard postal box – these are great for being re-used or can be easily thrown in with your cardboard recycling.
The tape – no plastic here! Postal boxes are taped shut using water-activated brown tape which is biodegradable and recyclable.
Tissue paper – The tissue paper used to package items is 100% recycled paper, and is biodegradable, recyclable, and compostable!
Thank you notes and swing tags – These are both recyclable. Swing tags are attached with a biodegradable twine.

So, after you receive your Elosa order, try to recycle all the components, use for wrapping something else, or you can quite simply leave it to rot away!

Ethical Practice...

Who made your clothes? I did! One of the most harmful aspects of the fast fashion industry is the effect on humans who produce the clothing. They are often over-worked and under-paid by huge businesses who make millions in profit. Elosa is a one-woman band whereby everything is designed and made by myself. This means that when purchasing an item from Elosa, you are guaranteed that the person who made it was not subject to harmful environments and is being paid a decent amount.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint...

Reducing our carbon footprint means reducing the amount of carbon we produce through various means. At Elosa, this is an important aspect of becoming a more sustainable business. One way in which our carbon emissions are kept as low as possible is through ordering supplies from other UK small businesses or companies. This means supplies don’t have to travel miles and miles, producing tonnes of carbon emissions. The machines used to create Elosa garments are also powered by green electricity.

What can you do to increase Elosa's sustainability?

After your order has been sent out, it’s up to you! Keep the sustainability going and make conscious choices about what you do with your packaging, and your clothing if you no longer wear or use it. Read this blog post on how to recycle clothing for more ideas…
